Epignosis Insights Publishes Global Rare Gas (Neon/Xenon) Price Tracker

Epignosis Insights Publishes Global Rare Gas (Neon/Xenon) Price Tracker

Epignosis Insights, a global market research and brand intelligence consultancy, today announced the publication of the Global Rare Gas (Neon/Xenon) Price Tracker, the latest addition to its Global Commodity Price Tracker Series. The report tracks the monthly cost trajectory of semiconductor-grade neon and xenon from January through August 2026, four years on from the 2022 Ukraine supply shock that sent both gases to extraordinary highs.

According to the tracker, the Epignosis Insights composite index for neon opened January 2026 at an estimated USD 58 per cubic metre and eased to roughly USD 48 per cubic metre by August, a decline of nearly 17 percent across the eight-month window. The composite index for xenon opened January at an estimated USD 3,050 per kilogram and eased to roughly USD 2,650 per kilogram over the same period, a decline of around 13 percent.

This improvement was driven primarily by diversified sourcing away from Ukraine's historically dominant share of semiconductor-grade neon output, expanded air-separation capacity in China and South Korea, and softer procurement urgency as semiconductor buyers worked through a period of inventory rebuilding.

Even with this progress, the tracker finds that neon remained priced at close to eleven times its pre-2022 benchmark of roughly USD 4.50 per cubic metre by August, while xenon remained priced at close to 1.7 times its pre-2022 benchmark of roughly USD 1,550 per kilogram. The report notes this persistent gap underscores how far both markets still sit from pre-crisis normalcy, even as headline prices continue to ease.

Gas-Specific Dynamics

The tracker breaks down the distinct dynamics shaping each gas. Neon's dominant historical supply base, concentrated in Ukrainian producers operating near major steelworks, remains only partially restored, with the bulk of the market's recovery instead coming from newly built or expanded capacity in China, South Korea, and the United States. Semiconductor-grade neon purified to 99.999 percent or higher for excimer laser lithography continues to command a substantial purity premium over industrial-grade neon used in signage and illumination, and demand for that highest grade keeps climbing as leading-edge nodes require more neon per wafer than older process generations. Xenon's supply base, by contrast, was never as geographically concentrated as neon's, with output historically spread across the United States, Russia, France, and China in addition to Ukraine, which limited the severity of xenon's 2022 spike on a percentage basis. Xenon demand is also more diversified, spanning semiconductor processing, medical imaging and anaesthesia, satellite and spacecraft electric propulsion, and high-intensity lighting.

Supply- and Demand-Side Drivers

On the supply side, the report identifies continued capacity diversification away from pre-2022 concentration in Eastern Europe as the dominant theme of the window. A joint venture between a South Korean steelmaker and a Chinese cryogenic technology specialist continued ramping neon, xenon, and krypton output through the first half of 2026, while a specialist U.S. rare-gas reprocessing company expanded its role in the domestic supply chain, including a multi-year agreement supporting xenon recovery for space and propulsion applications. Industrial gas majors operating global air-separation networks reported stable to improving operating rates across major hubs, supporting consistent by-product recovery of both gases.

On the demand side, the tracker finds 2026 consumption anchored by the ongoing global semiconductor upcycle, with industry association data pointing to sharply higher year-on-year semiconductor sales in the first quarter. Even so, the window did not see a repeat of the acute spot-market panic buying that characterized 2022, as leading foundries and memory makers now maintain more diversified supplier panels and longer-dated procurement agreements than before the crisis.

Outlook for Q4 2026

Looking to the fourth quarter, Epignosis Insights' base case anticipates continued gradual easing rather than a sharp inflection for either gas, with the neon composite expected to drift toward USD 44 to USD 48 per cubic metre by year-end and the xenon composite expected to ease toward USD 2,500 to USD 2,650 per kilogram. The report identifies renewed disruption to Eastern European air-separation output, or a sharp acceleration in semiconductor capital spending tied to next-generation lithography, as the largest swing factors for the remainder of the year.

“Rare gas costs are still being shaped by how quickly the world diversifies away from a supply base that used to sit almost entirely in one region,” said a specialty gases and materials practice lead at Epignosis Insights. “Procurement teams should treat this index as a planning benchmark rather than a quotable market price, given how thin open spot trading remains for both gases at this stage.”

About the Report

The Global Rare Gas (Neon/Xenon) Price Tracker is compiled and maintained by Epignosis Insights as the primary aggregating source, drawing on a deliberately diversified evidence base that includes government mineral commodity data, an industry association's semiconductor sales reporting, a listed industrial gas major's annual report and investor disclosures, a specialist industrial-gas consulting firm, and international trade news, each used once in this edition. The composite figures presented in the report should be read as directional, analyst-informed estimates rather than transactable market prices.

The full report, including the monthly composite and premium data table, three chart exhibits, and a frequently asked questions section, is available now on the Epignosis Insights website.
