This edition covers the first-half 2026 pricing cycle, a period defined by an unusually sharp feedstock shock: the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following the outbreak of conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran in late February 2026 sent crude oil, and everything built on it, into a volatility spike that rippled through naphtha, benzene, ethylene, styrene monomer, and finally polystyrene itself.
Polystyrene pricing in the first half of 2026 was defined less by ordinary supply-demand rebalancing than by a geopolitical feedstock shock and its aftermath. Brent crude, the ultimate cost anchor for the entire styrene chain, rose from an average of $71 per barrel in February to $117 per barrel in April, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, before easing back to $85 per barrel by June as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz gradually resumed. Layered on top of that crude spike, Saudi Arabian producer SABIC and its affiliate Petrokemya declared force majeure on styrene monomer exports in late March, a disruption that ICIS reported left Europe, China, and India, which source 33%, 44%, and 40% of their styrene monomer imports respectively from Saudi Arabia, acutely exposed. U.S. domestic resin producers, tracked monthly by the American Chemistry Council, posted a dip in February output followed by recovery through March and May, while Trinseo, one of the major integrated producers of styrene and polystyrene, reported in its second-quarter 2026 results that a storm-driven force majeure at its Tessenderlo, Belgium polystyrene plant further tightened European availability between late March and early May. Wood Mackenzie's structural view, meanwhile, is that these acute shocks are unfolding against a backdrop of chronic oversupply, meaning near-term price spikes are unlikely to translate into a durable margin recovery for producers.
Understanding polystyrene price movements requires tracing the full upstream chain, since PS itself has no independent cost base; it inherits volatility from every stage that precedes it. Crude oil and natural gas are refined into naphtha and ethane, which are converted into benzene and ethylene, combined into styrene monomer, and finally polymerized into general-purpose or high-impact polystyrene resin. Each arrow in that chain is a point where regional disruptions, whether a cracker outage, a force majeure declaration, or a shipping chokepoint closure, can add cost and lag before it reaches the finished resin price.

Polystyrene's cost structure begins with crude oil and natural gas, which are refined into naphtha and ethane, combined through alkylation into ethylbenzene, and then dehydrogenated into styrene monomer, the direct precursor to polystyrene resin. Because benzene alone can account for roughly 80% of styrene's molecular weight, and by extension a large share of its production cost, any sustained move in crude prices transmits through the entire chain within weeks. The EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook data captures this transmission with unusual clarity for the current cycle: Brent crude averaged $71 per barrel in February, before the Strait of Hormuz closure; spiked to $117 per barrel in April, a level the agency noted was the highest monthly average since June 2022; and eased to $85 per barrel by June as tanker traffic began moving through the strait again following a memorandum of understanding between the conflicting parties. The agency's own forecast, published in its August 2026 outlook, expects Brent to hold near $85 per barrel through the third quarter, with most pre-conflict production and trade patterns not expected to normalize until late 2026 or early 2027.

The crude spike alone would have pressured polystyrene costs, but the styrene monomer market absorbed a second, more direct shock in March. According to ICIS, Kuwait's EQUATE Petrochemical Company declared force majeure on monoethylene glycol supplies on March 12, followed on March 26 and 27 by a broader SABIC force majeure covering methanol, styrene monomer, and ethylene glycols, with affiliate Petrokemya separately declaring force majeure on its styrene monomer plants in Al Jubail. The proximate cause was the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of the world's oil and gas flows, cutting off Middle Eastern cargoes bound for Asia and Europe. ICIS analyst Su Jie was quoted noting that European styrene producers, having already rationalized capacity in recent years, had grown increasingly reliant on Middle Eastern imports and had limited buffer supply to absorb the shock, a vulnerability that Argus Media separately reported had pushed US styrene prices to a nearly two-year high by late March, just as industry participants gathered for the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers' annual conference in San Antonio.
The knock-on effects reached well beyond the Gulf. Argus Media's reporting on the European market found that naphtha prices averaged €477 per tonne in February, up €31.5 per tonne from January, and that the resulting cost pressure pushed the March ethylene monthly contract price settlement to a €50 per tonne increase, an amount market participants said was unlikely to fully offset the feedstock cost increase producers had already absorbed. With polystyrene and ABS producers entering their seasonally stronger spring demand period at the same time supply tightened, ICIS and Argus both reported that the disruption was expected to ripple into consumer-facing products, from disposable food packaging and cutlery to ABS-based consumer electronics housings and toys.
Trinseo, whose Polymer Solutions segment includes general-purpose polystyrene alongside ABS and other styrenic resins, reported second-quarter 2026 net sales for that segment of $306 million, up 7% year-over-year, a gain the company attributed to higher prices passed through in response to elevated raw material costs, even as volumes were held back. The company disclosed that its Tessenderlo, Belgium polystyrene facility experienced a force majeure from operational storm damage between late March and early May, with plant operations fully restored only by the end of May, compounding the Middle East-driven supply tightness across the European market during the same window. Trinseo's Americas Styrenics joint venture, which produces both styrene monomer and polystyrene, posted Adjusted EBITDA of just $1 million for the quarter, seven million dollars below the prior year, a decline the company attributed directly to higher benzene costs and soft end-market demand, illustrating how a feedstock cost spike can compress producer margins even while list prices for the finished resin are rising.
On the supply side, the American Chemistry Council's monthly Resin Production and Sales Statistics offer the clearest domestic production signal available. U.S. production of major plastic resins fell 7.8% month-over-month to 8.2 billion pounds in February 2026, coinciding with the start of the crude spike, before recovering to 9.2 billion pounds in March, a 12.9% month-over-month increase, and reaching 9.3 billion pounds by May, up 12.7% from the same month a year earlier. While the ACC's resin statistics span all major thermoplastics rather than polystyrene alone, the pattern is consistent with what producers described in their own disclosures: a short, sharp disruption in the immediate aftermath of the feedstock shock, followed by a return to, and eventual acceleration past, prior-year production levels as supply chains adjusted.

Even as acute shocks pushed spot prices higher through the spring, the medium-term structural picture painted by Wood Mackenzie is markedly less bullish for producers. The consultancy's analysis describes the broader petrochemical sector, styrene and polystyrene included, as caught in an oversupply cycle driven by a wave of new Asian and Middle Eastern capacity additions, with Asia alone accounting for more than half of global petrochemical demand and remaining the epicenter of future consumption growth. Wood Mackenzie's outlook holds that this capacity build-up is expected to slow only after 2026, after which the industry would pivot toward a slower, demand-led recovery; the firm expects the sector will not reach what it calls satisfactory profitability levels until the early 2030s, and anticipates further capacity rationalization over the next 12 to 18 months as underperforming assets are idled or closed. Read against this backdrop, the spring 2026 price spike looks less like the start of a durable upcycleand more like a sharp, temporary disruption layered on top of a market that remains structurally oversupplied.
Feedstock cost is only half of the pricing equation; the other half is how downstream demand absorbs, or resists, cost increases as they are passed through. Packaging remains polystyrene's largest single end-use, spanning rigid food containers, foam clamshells, and protective packaging, and this segment has shown more resilience to price pass-through than construction-linked applications such as expanded polystyrene insulation board, where softer building activity in parts of Europe and North America has made converters more resistant to accepting higher resin costs. Consumer electronics housings and appliance components, another meaningful demand pool for high-impact polystyrene grades, have also shown uneven offtake, with Trinseo and peers describing soft end-market demand as a drag on volumes even as list prices rose. This divergence between cost-push pricing and demand-pull resistance is a key reason producer margins, rather than headline resin prices alone, tell the more complete story of market health during this reporting cycle.
Regulatory pressure adds a further complication that a monthly tracker cannot ignore. Single-use foodservice polystyrene bans, now in effect across a growing list of European and North American jurisdictions, continue to cap long-run demand growth for general-purpose grades even as short-term feedstock shocks push spot prices higher. At the same time, chemical recycling initiatives, including Trinseo's use of chemically recycled styrene monomer sourced from Indaver's depolymerization plant in Antwerp, are beginning to create a parallel, sustainability-linked pricing tier for recycled-content resin, distinct from the virgin-material pricing this tracker primarily follows. Buyers sourcing food-contact or brand-sensitive packaging grades should expect this recycled-content premium to persist and potentially widen as more brand owners commit to recycled-content targets.
Epignosis Insights expects polystyrene pricing to track the pace of Strait of Hormuz normalization and Middle Eastern force majeure resolution more closely than any single demand indicator over the coming reporting cycle. The EIA's own forecast assumes ongoing disruptions of roughly 0.6 million barrels per day will persist even after most production returns to near pre-conflict levels in early 2027, implying a floor under feedstock costs that is unlikely to fully unwind in the immediate term. Against that, Wood Mackenzie's oversupply thesis suggests any cost-driven price gains will face resistance from available capacity the moment force majeures lift and Gulf cargoes resume normal flow.
Buyers should expect continued regional divergence, with Europe remaining the most exposed market to further shocks, and should treat the current elevated pricing environment as a feedstock-driven anomaly rather than a signal of tightening long-term fundamentals.
