Viscose Staple Fibre Prices Up 12.6% Year-to-Date as Margin-Led Rally Extends into September

Epignosis Insights, a market research and brand intelligence consultancy, today released its Global Viscose Rayon Price Tracker for September 2026. The monthly assessment finds that viscose staple fibre (VSF) prices extended their 2026 recovery, with the China benchmark for 1.2D x 38mm fibre, the global reference grade, reaching 14,520 RMB per tonne in the 14–20 September assessment window. The level is 0.8% above the August close and 12.6% higher than where the year opened.

Key Highlights

  • The China VSF benchmark stands at 14,520 RMB per tonne, with prices advancing in seven of the eight months since the January trough of 12,800 RMB.
  • The August 2026 close of 14,400 RMB marks a year-on-year gain of about 10.4% against an August 2025 average near 13,040 RMB.
  • The indicative pulp-to-fibre spread has widened about 31% since January to roughly 7,970 RMB per tonne.
  • VSF trades around 3,380 RMB per tonne, or 19%, below the China Cotton Index.
  • The Epignosis Insights base case places the December 2026 price at 14,600–14,700 RMB per tonne.

A Margin-Led Rally, Not a Cost-Led One

The defining feature of the 2026 cycle is that fibre prices have risen while raw material costs have stood still. Dissolving pulp, required at roughly one tonne per tonne of fibre, has traded in a narrow 6,500–6,600 RMB band since early in the year. Chinese producers have instead used tight inventories and coordinated list-price increases to rebuild conversion margins, moving from loss-making territory in January to positive cash margins by September.

“This is a producer-led market,” said Abhijith Nair, Senior Research Manager at Epignosis Insights. “Fibre makers have pushed through small, frequent increases that buyers have accepted but not chased. Because the rally rests on margin discipline rather than cost pass-through, its durability now depends on supply behaviour and downstream demand.”

Three Phases of the 2026 Price Cycle

The tracker identifies three distinct phases. A post-holiday trough in January and February saw producers trim prices ahead of the Spring Festival before the benchmark stabilised at 12,840 RMB. A stepped recovery followed from March to May, led by a 3.9% gain in April, the strongest month of the year, and three separate list-price increases in May. After a plateau through June and July, a second leg began with increases on 19 and 27 August. Holding gains through the traditional July lull suggests this year’s strength is structural rather than purely seasonal.

Cotton Strength Widens the Substitution Advantage

Cotton has provided the most important external support. The US Department of Agriculture’s August 2026 Cotton and Wool Outlook projects world mill use to exceed production in 2026/27, while Cotton Incorporated reported the A Index rising from 90 to 95 cents per pound during August, with the China Cotton Index 3128B near 17,900 RMB per tonne. At a discount of about 19%, Epignosis Insights views viscose as unusually cheap for a fibre that has often priced at or above cotton in tight markets, encouraging spinners to raise viscose content in blended yarns.

Regional Dynamics

China

China remains the global price-setter, supported by low producer inventories and repeated coordinated price-holding behaviour.

India

The Ministry of Textiles’ revocation of the Quality Control Order on VSF in November 2025 has pulled domestic prices closer to Asian import parity. Grasim Industries reported Q1 FY27 cellulosic staple fibre volumes of 202 KT, down 4% year-on-year, while segment revenue rose 12% on improved global prices and a richer specialty mix.

Europe

Lenzing’s first-half 2026 results showed EBITDA of EUR 239.2 million at an 18.9% margin as the company deliberately cut low-margin volumes and moved to consolidate fibre sites, tightening non-Chinese commodity supply.

Q4 2026 Outlook

Epignosis Insights expects prices to remain firm but range-bound through the fourth quarter. The base case, assigned a 60% probability, places the December benchmark at 14,600–14,700 RMB per tonne. An upside case of around 15,100 RMB would require a further cotton rally or a supply disruption, while a downside case of around 14,100 RMB would follow weak post-Golden Week orders and margin-driven restarts of idled capacity.

“Downstream demand will decide how far this runs,” added Nair. “Spinners are buying hand-to-mouth on thin yarn margins. If the cotton discount lifts mill operating rates after Golden Week, the base case holds. If not, the August–September gains are vulnerable.”

Implications for the Value Chain

Fibre producers have captured most of the 2026 gain, while spinners face a narrowing yarn-over-fibre margin. Garment makers should expect yarn prices to lag fibre by one to two months, with catch-up risk in the fourth quarter. For procurement teams, the tracker supports layering contract coverage into Q4 rather than waiting for a pullback, since cotton parity and producer discipline limit downside.

About the Report

The Global Viscose Rayon Price Tracker reports month-end ex-factory prices for 1.2D x 38mm cotton-type VSF in China, compiled from daily SunSirs benchmark assessments and cross-checked against producer disclosures, cotton benchmarks and trade data. The full report covers monthly price series, cost and margin analysis, a price driver scorecard, regional dynamics and scenario forecasts.
