Global Lithium Carbonate Price Tracker September 2026 – Website Press Release
Epignosis Insights, a market research and brand intelligence consultancy, today released its Global Lithium Carbonate Price Tracker for September 2026. The monthly report gives cathode makers, battery producers, miners and investors a single view of Chinese and seaborne lithium carbonate prices, futures activity, production, demand and the outlook.
The tracker finds that battery-grade lithium carbonate ex-works China fell from about RMB159,300 per tonne at the end of August to RMB127,750 per tonne on 30 September. That is a monthly decline of roughly 19.8%, which wiped out the entire August rally within days and left Chinese spot prices near their lowest level of 2026.
Epignosis Insights concludes that September's sell-off was driven mainly by sentiment and futures positioning. Underlying demand and supply signals remain more supportive than the headline price implies.
September 2026 Price Highlights
| Indicator | September 2026 | Context |
| China EXW battery-grade carbonate | RMB127,750/t (30 Sep) | –19.8% from end-August |
| China EXW carbonate, US$ basis | ≈US$19,025/t | –20.8% over Q3 2026 |
| CIF Asia battery-grade carbonate | ≈US$16,800–17,400/t | Epignosis indicative, down from US$19,750 on 2 Sep |
| Spodumene SC6 FOB Australia | US$1,780/t (end-Q3) | –23.5% over Q3 |
| China carbonate production | 114,700 t | +7.7% month on month |
A mid-month shock reset the market
The decisive move came on 16 September. EXW China carbonate fell 7.3% and CIF Asia spot fell 11.9% in a single assessment after a Chinese third-party data provider sharply revised up its lithium inventory estimate, a change later described as mainly methodological. Futures longs unwound first, spot followed, and seaborne markets repriced last. The main Guangzhou futures contract lost 10.6% in the month, including a single-day fall of 7.41% on 4 September.
Seaborne buyers will feel the fall later
Chinese futures and spot set the direction for lithium, and CIF Asia, European and North American prices follow with a lag of several weeks. Epignosis Insights expects much of September's decline to reach non-Chinese contract settlements during October and November.
Supply and Demand Developments
Supply signals point in opposite directions
CATL's Jianxiawo mine, China's largest lithium operation, returned to care and maintenance after regulators revoked its environmental approval. Epignosis Insights treats this as the most important bullish supply factor for the fourth quarter, since a restart now needs a fresh review that could run into 2027. Against this, idled Australian hard-rock capacity is returning, including Bald Hill and Finniss, and China's carbonate output rose 7.7% to 114,700 tonnes in September, with a further increase expected in October.
Demand remains firmer than sentiment
China's new energy vehicle sales rose 17.8% year on year to 1.643 million units in August, and NEVs took a record 60.6% share of new vehicle sales. Globally, battery demand grew by more than 35% in 2025 to surpass 1.5 TWh, with energy storage emerging as a major driver. LFP cathode output for energy storage held up better than NCM in September, cushioning weakness in premium EV chemistries.
Producers retain healthy margins
Albemarle's realised lithium price rose 60.5% year on year to US$19.53 per kilogram LCE in the second quarter of 2026, and PLS described FY26 as a record year. Because many producers sell on lagged contract terms, September's spot decline will reach realised prices gradually through the fourth quarter.
Outlook and Epignosis Insights View
Medium-term fundamentals stay constructive
The Australian Government expects global lithium demand to grow by more than 11% a year to 2031, against supply growth of about 7.3% a year. Policy is adding friction: China introduced a 2% consumption tax on lithium-ion batteries from 1 September 2026, rising to 4% from September 2027, and has paused new cell capacity approvals.
Price outlook
Epignosis Insights expects China EXW battery-grade carbonate to trade between RMB118,000 and RMB135,000 per tonne in October. Its base case places fourth-quarter 2026 CIF Asia carbonate at US$17,500 per tonne, within a US$16,000–19,000 range. The base case assumes Jianxiawo stays offline through year-end and Australian restarts continue to ramp.
"September was a sentiment shock, not a fundamental reversal," said Abhijith Nair, Senior Research Manager at Epignosis Insights. "An inventory revision and policy headlines forced heavy futures liquidation, but chemical stocks kept falling and NEV demand reached a record share in China. We expect prices to stabilise in a range rather than keep falling at September's pace, and buyers outside China will see the real relief arrive in their fourth-quarter contracts."
The tracker's procurement guidance is for cathode and cell makers to use dips toward RMB120,000 to add spot coverage, keep most 2027 volumes on formula-based contracts, and for producers to avoid fixing prices below US$16,000 per tonne.
