Epignosis Insights Global Manganese Sulphate Price Tracker: Battery-Grade Prices Consolidate After 21% Rally as Ore Costs Ease

Epignosis Insights, a market research and brand intelligence consultancy, today released the September 2026 edition of its Global Manganese Sulphate Price Tracker, a monthly intelligence report covering battery-grade manganese sulphate pricing, production costs, ore supply, electric vehicle demand and forward price scenarios.

The latest edition finds that the manganese sulphate market has entered a consolidation phase after an eight-month rally. According to Epignosis Insights' monthly assessment, battery-grade manganese sulphate (Mn ≥32%, ex-works China, VAT inclusive) averaged an estimated CNY 7,650 per tonne in September 2026, approximately USD 1,117 per tonne. This represents a 1.3% decline from August but a gain of around 21% since January, when prices stood near CNY 6,300 per tonne.

Key Findings from the September 2026 Edition

Cost Pressures Drove the 2026 Rally

The tracker identifies production costs as the dominant force behind this year's price increase. Sulphuric acid prices climbed to multi-year highs in the first half of 2026, while imported manganese ore remained firm. Epignosis Insights' analysis shows that immediate production costs rose by roughly 11% between January and April, while producers passed on more than the cost increase, lifting estimated margins from about 12% to about 18% of the selling price at the April peak.

Easing Ore Offers Trigger the First Cost-Led Decline Since June

September's modest decline reflects softer raw-material conditions. Several major ore suppliers lowered their October offers to China amid high port inventories and weak alloy demand, reducing the cost floor for sulphate refiners. At the same time, cathode precursor producers continued to source mainly through long-term contracts, limiting spot purchasing. Epignosis Insights estimates that producer margins have narrowed to around 13–15%.

Electric Vehicle Demand Remains Constructive

On the demand side, China's new energy vehicle sector delivered double-digit growth in August 2026, with sales rising nearly 18% year-on-year and reaching a record share of more than 60% of total vehicle sales. Exports more than doubled compared with the previous year. However, domestic vehicle sales overall declined sharply, meaning growth is increasingly reliant on exports and on battery chemistry choices, particularly the adoption of manganese-rich LMFP cathodes.

Supply Concentration and Ex-China Diversification

The report highlights the concentrated nature of manganese ore supply, with South Africa accounting for close to 40% of global mine output, while China dominates sulphate refining but depends heavily on imported ore. Outside China, policy frameworks are encouraging new investment in high-purity manganese sulphate, and Epignosis Insights expects a regional supply premium to become more visible in contract pricing from 2027.

Management Commentary

Manganese sulphate prices in 2026 have been written by the cost curve rather than by demand. Now that ore offers are easing, the market is testing how much of that cost-driven premium it can hold. With electric vehicle demand still growing and sulphuric acid elevated, we see this as a period of consolidation rather than the start of a downturn, and the fourth-quarter contract season will be the key moment for price discovery." — Abhijith Nair, Senior Research Manager, Epignosis Insights

Price Outlook and Scenarios

Epignosis Insights' base case places battery-grade manganese sulphate between CNY 7,300 and CNY 7,900 per tonne in the fourth quarter of 2026. A bear case of CNY 6,900–7,300 assumes further cuts in ore offers and a correction in sulphuric acid, while a bull case of CNY 7,900–8,500 would follow a renewed acid spike, ore supply disruption or stronger precursor restocking ahead of 2027. Indicators to watch include October ore offers, Chinese acid prices, September electric vehicle data and the outcome of year-end contract negotiations.

Implications for Industry Stakeholders

For cathode precursor producers and battery manufacturers, the tracker suggests that the current softer spot window offers an opportunity to secure part of 2027 requirements, ideally through index-linked contract structures that preserve flexibility. Buyers outside China are advised to begin evaluating the cost of regional-content premiums against the supply-security benefits of diversified sourcing. Traders and investors can use the report's driver map and scenario ranges to frame positioning ahead of the contract season.
