Global Glass Prices Diverge as Europe's Energy Shock Meets China's Oversupply, Finds Epignosis Insights

Epignosis Insights, a market research and brand intelligence consultancy, today released the September 2026 edition of its Global Glass Price Tracker. The monthly report finds that glass prices are moving in sharply different directions across the world's three main producing regions.

In Europe, natural gas averaged €76.48 per megawatt-hour in September, but the regional float glass index held at US$0.83/kg, meaning producers have not yet passed the cost shock through. In China, weak property demand and high inventories pushed the front-month flat glass futures contract down to RMB 913 per tonne. North American flat glass prices continued a slow, cost-driven climb.

Epignosis Insights expects this gap between costs and prices to narrow in the fourth quarter, with European prices rising and Chinese float glass remaining under pressure.

Key Findings from the September 2026 Tracker

Regional benchmarks hold, but for different reasons

Float glass indices were steady in North America at US$1.05/kg and in Europe at US$0.83/kg, while Northeast Asia slipped 1.7% to US$1.16/kg. Epignosis Insights reads the flat European figure as a lagging signal: float lines sell largely on quarterly or half-yearly contracts, so a gas shock that began in late August typically reaches invoices only through Q4 surcharges and January contract resets.

China: the peak season that never arrived

China's architectural glass market entered its traditional September peak season without the expected demand lift. Mainstream ex-factory prices for 5mm clear glass in North China fell to RMB 920–960 per tonne as producers used rebates and low-price deals to move volume. Factory inventories remained high year-on-year.
The Zhengzhou front-month flat glass contract settled at RMB 913/t on September 30, with the second month at RMB 875/t, signalling that the market expects further weakness. Producers are keeping costly continuous furnaces running at thin margins rather than idling them, and Epignosis Insights expects the inventory overhang to cap any recovery until more lines go down for cold repair.

Europe: the energy shock returns

European gas climbed from €69.81/MWh at the end of August to its highest level since early 2023 in mid-September, driven by Middle East tensions. The increase compounds structural pressure that European glass industry bodies have flagged throughout 2026 over energy and carbon costs.

"Europe's glass makers are carrying a cost shock that hasn't yet shown up in their prices," said Abhijith Nair, Senior Research Manager at Epignosis Insights. "We expect surcharges in the fourth quarter, while China's oversupply keeps Asian prices under pressure. Buyers need a regional strategy, not a global one."

Solar Glass, North America and Producer Economics

Solar glass rebounds on supply discipline

Chinese solar (PV) glass was the one segment where prices rose meaningfully. After six months of declines, coordinated output cuts by leading producers lifted 3.2mm double-coated glass 3.3% to RMB 17.15/m² by the end of August, while 2.0mm double-coated glass rose from RMB 10.15/m² to a listed RMB 11.50/m² on September 1.
Epignosis Insights notes that the rebound rests on supply discipline rather than demand, as mid-September trading was quiet and module makers remain under margin pressure. The more important signal is behavioural: Chinese producers have shown they can coordinate output to defend prices, a pattern that could extend to float glass if new government rules against below-cost selling are enforced.

North America: steady cost pass-through

The US producer price index for flat glass rose 0.1% month-on-month in August and 2.8% year-on-year. North American container glass also looked healthier than Europe's, with favourable pricing offsetting lower shipments in the second quarter. With US natural gas far cheaper than European supply, Epignosis Insights expects
North American flat glass to stay stable to firm.

Producer margins under strain

Company results reflect the regional split. In Europe, one of the largest container glass producers reported a sharp fall in second-quarter operating profit, citing competitive pricing and higher energy costs. In China, a leading float glass producer reported lower float glass margins in the first half, though softer soda ash and energy costs helped lift overall profit. Epignosis Insights sees soft soda ash prices as a global offset that favours integrated, energy-efficient producers.

Q4 2026 Outlook

Epignosis Insights expects regional divergence to widen before it narrows in the fourth quarter.

Segment Q4 2026 view Indicative range
Europe float glass Rising +3% to +6% q/q
North America flat glass Stable to firm +0% to +2% q/q
China float glass Sideways to weak RMB 850–960/t
China PV glass (2.0mm)     Firm, capped     RMB 11–12/m²
Europe container glass Firm price, thin margin     Energy surcharges likely

The main risk to this view is energy. A de-escalation in the Middle East that restores Persian Gulf flows could pull European gas prices lower and remove the case for surcharges, while further escalation would push European glass prices above the base range. In China, an aggressive round of furnace closures would tighten supply faster than demand recovers.
