Epignosis Insights Releases Global Essential Oils Market Report, Projects Industry Growth to US$9.83 Billion by 2034

Epignosis Insights, a market research and brand intelligence consultancy, has published its latest study on the global essential oils market, forecasting growth from US$6.91 billion in 2025 to US$9.83 billion by 2034, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8% between 2027 and 2034. The report examines the market across extraction methods including steam distillation, hydro distillation, cold pressing, solvent extraction, CO2 extraction, expression, enfleurage and maceration, and evaluates how organic sourcing, product authenticity and extraction innovation are reshaping supplier strategy heading into the next decade.

A Steadily Expanding Market in Both Volume and Value

According to the report, global essential oils consumption is set to rise from 323,626 tons in 2025 to 420,246 tons by 2034, continuing on from a sales volume of 316,350 tons recorded in 2024 and a historical CAGR of 3.6%. Average prices are projected to move from US$21,340 per ton in 2025 to US$23,400 per ton by 2034, indicating that growth will come from a combination of rising consumption and gradual price appreciation. Epignosis Insights notes that aromatherapy, wellness, cosmetics and personal care continue to anchor demand, while food, beverage and pharmaceutical applications provide additional, if smaller, contributions to overall market expansion.

Organic Certification Is Becoming a Commercial Requirement, Not a Marketing Extra

The report places particular emphasis on the shift toward certified organic and clean-label essential oils. It cites US certified organic product sales of US$69.7 billion in 2023, up 3.4% year over year, alongside organic personal care sales of US$1.3 billion, a 6.8% increase, drawing on data from the Organic Trade Association and the US Department of Agriculture. On the supply side, the report highlights APEDA data showing India's certified organic essential oil exports rising from 137.27 tonnes in 2022–23 to 280.82 tonnes in 2024–25, an increase of roughly 105%, with export value climbing from ₹45.95 crore to US$12.35 million over the same period. Epignosis Insights concludes that suppliers are being asked to prove organic status, botanical identity, origin and traceability rather than simply describe products as natural.

Authenticity Testing Is Now a Core Part of Quality Assurance

Adulteration and authenticity verification feature prominently in the report's findings. A cited Scientific Reports study found more than 45% of 31 commercial neroli, mandarin and bergamot oil samples failed applicable ISO and AFNOR compositional specifications, while a 2024 lavender study found only 51% of samples labelled Lavandula angustifolia were genuine. Peppermint samples showed a 53% non-compliance rate against ISO specifications in one study, and a separate fennel, star anise and anise oil study identified adulteration in 27% of commercial samples. The report notes that gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, chiral analysis and isotope ratio testing are increasingly necessary tools for suppliers seeking to protect product credibility and support premium pricing claims.

Extraction Technology Choices Are Reshaping Production Economics

The report also evaluates how extraction technology affects yield, cost and sustainability outcomes. It cites a comprehensive review finding that microwave-assisted hydrodistillation can raise yield by 32% while cutting average extraction time by 67.17% relative to conventional hydrodistillation. Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction is shown to carry a production cost range of US$6.71 to US$42.69 per kilogram compared with US$15.85 to US$76.50 per kilogram for steam distillation, alongside materially lower energy use and emissions in comparative studies. At the same time, a techno-economic assessment of commercial-scale peppermint oil extraction using conventional steam distillation reported a 73.9% return on investment and a 1.26-year payback period, underscoring that established technology still delivers strong project economics even as newer methods gain traction.

Consumer Demand Is Broad, but Retention Requires Clear Value

Drawing on consumer research, the report finds that essential oil use has become mainstream: a 2025 survey of 1,848 Bulgarian adults found 68.7% had used essential oils, with 59.1% of users reporting aromatherapy use and 54.4% reporting cosmetic applications, and 80.6% of users said they would recommend specific oils to others. Lavender remains the most widely used oil at 68.6% of users, ahead of tea tree at 43.7% and peppermint at 39.5%, giving established botanicals a durable familiarity advantage. However, the same research found that 25% of users who had tried essential oils later discontinued use, most often citing high cost or unmet benefit expectations. Epignosis Insights notes that this gap between initial advocacy and sustained loyalty places pressure on brands to communicate transparent, verifiable benefit claims alongside fair pricing and clear safety guidance.

Competitive Benchmarking via the EICAF Framework

The report profiles leading global participants, including Givaudan, dsm-firmenich, IFF, Symrise, Robertet, MANE, Sensient Technologies, Takasago International, Biolandes, Lebermuth, Berjé, AOS Products, Arora Aromatics, Ultra International, Citrus and Allied Essences, Florihana, doTERRA, Young Living, Plant Therapy, NOW Foods, Mountain Rose Herbs, Edens Garden, Rocky Mountain Oils, Pranarom, Aromatherapy Associates and others. Competitive positioning is assessed using the proprietary Epignosis Insights Competitive Assessment Framework (EICAF), which scores companies across 10 weighted parameters. Sourcing and supply chain and quality and authenticity each carry the highest weighting at 14%, reflecting their outsized influence on cost, reliability and buyer trust across the essential oils value chain.
