Europe Fertilizer Price Tracker September 2026 – Website Press Release
Epignosis Insights, a market research and brand intelligence consultancy, today released its Europe Fertilizer Price Tracker for September 2026. The monthly report gives distributors, farmers, producers and investors a single view of global nitrogen, phosphate and potash benchmarks alongside European farm-gate and wholesale prices, energy costs, trade policy and the outlook.
The tracker finds that European fertilizer prices firmed in September as a sharp rise in natural gas costs pushed nitrogen higher. The global urea benchmark rose 4.5% to US$407.5 per tonne, DAP edged up to US$800.6 and potassium chloride fell 5.0% to US$367.5. In Great Britain, UK-produced ammonium nitrate reached about £484 per tonne delivered by the end of the month, while Italian wholesale urea held at €620–630 per tonne.
Epignosis Insights concludes that European delivered prices are now set by local gas costs, trade barriers and logistics rather than by world urea, which remains less than half its April peak.
September 2026 Price Highlights
| Indicator | September 2026 | Context |
| Urea benchmark | US$407.5/t | +4.5% month on month; April peak US$856.9 |
| DAP benchmark | US$800.6/t | Up about 29% since January |
| Potassium chloride benchmark | US$367.5/t | –5.0% month on month |
| GB UK-produced ammonium nitrate | ≈£484/t delivered (end-Sep) | +£91 year on year |
| Italy urea 46%, Turin wholesale | €620–630/t (24 Sep) | Unchanged week on week |
| TTF gas | ≈€79.45/MWh (9 Sep) | Up from €29.2 in Nov 2025 |
Global nitrogen has stopped falling
The urea benchmark surged from US$415 in January to US$857 in April after the Strait of Hormuz supply shock, then settled at US$390–410 through the summer. Epignosis Insights reads September's small rebound as the first sign that nitrogen has found a floor, driven by restocking and higher energy costs rather than a new supply disruption.
European prices tell a firmer story
Delivered prices in Europe sit well above world-linked levels. Italian wholesale urea at €620–630 per tonne is now higher than the roughly €550 German farmers reported paying in March, even though the global benchmark has halved since April. Phosphate remains the tightest nutrient, while potash is the one clear area of relief.
Energy, Producers and Trade Policy
Gas sets a high floor for European nitrogen
Dutch TTF gas settled near €79.45 per MWh on 9 September, with EU storage about 18 percentage points below its five-year average in late August. Epignosis Insights estimates that at this gas price the feedstock cost alone is about €840 per tonne of ammonia and €486 per tonne of urea, almost three times late-2025 levels. Integrated nitrate and NPK producers can still cover these costs, but stand-alone urea and merchant ammonia capacity is most at risk of curtailment. AGF Nitrogen has already confirmed a review across 3.6 million tonnes a year of ammonia capacity.
Producers profit from volatility
Yara reported second-quarter EBITDA excluding special items of US$906 million, up from US$652 million a year earlier, even as its European weighted average gas cost rose to US$15.8 per MMBtu. The company noted that the Strait of Hormuz blockage caused a sharp rise in urea prices at the end of the European buying season.
Policy is reshaping supply routes
The European Commission's Fertilizer Action Plan notes that gas makes up around 70–80% of nitrogen production costs and that plants representing about 9% of EU ammonia capacity have already closed permanently. The EU levy on Russian nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers is scheduled to rise to €315–430 per tonne by 2028, while CBAM has applied to imported fertilizers since January. Epignosis Insights expects European import demand to shift further toward North Africa and the Middle East.
Demand Outlook and Epignosis Insights View
Cautious buying is building an order backlog
After paying spring prices well above pre-conflict levels, many arable farmers in Britain and on the Continent have delayed autumn purchases. Epignosis Insights' assessment is that this caution is creating an order backlog rather than lost demand, and that a late rush in November and December could tighten availability and lift delivered prices even if world benchmarks stay flat.
Price outlook
For October, Epignosis Insights expects the urea benchmark to trade between US$390 and US$450 per tonne, UK-produced ammonium nitrate between £470 and £510 per tonne delivered, and Italian urea between €610 and €650 per tonne. Its base case places the fourth-quarter 2026 urea benchmark at US$440 per tonne, within a US$400–500 range, assuming TTF gas stays between €65 and €85 per MWh and Middle East shipping remains open.
"European farmers are no longer paying a world price for nitrogen; they are paying a European price," said Abhijith Nair, Senior Research Manager at Epignosis Insights. "World urea has halved since April, but gas near €79 per MWh, rising tariffs on Russian supply and thinner import options are holding delivered nitrates high. Buyers who wait for world prices to pull European costs lower may find themselves caught in a late-season logistics squeeze."
The tracker's procurement guidance is to cover at least half of spring nitrogen needs before December, compare products on cost per kilogram of nitrogen, and delay potash purchases while prices are easing.
