Asian Benzene Prices Jump 14% in September 2026 as Crude Rally and Tight Aromatics Supply Converge

Epignosis Insights, a market research and brand intelligence consultancy, today released its Asia Benzene Price Tracker – September 2026, a monthly assessment of benzene prices across South Korea, China, India and Southeast Asia, together with analysis of crude oil and naphtha costs, supply, derivative demand and the Q4 2026 outlook. The tracker finds that Asian benzene prices rose sharply in September, driven by a rally in crude oil, reduced aromatics output from Northeast Asian crackers and refineries, and low inventories in China.

According to Epignosis Insights' assessments, FOB Korea benzene averaged US$1,140 per tonne in September, up 14.0% from August and the highest monthly average since March 2026, when disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz first sent feedstock costs soaring.

Key Findings

  • FOB Korea benzene averaged US$1,140/t, up 14.0% month on month and 44% above February 2026.
  • CFR China rose 13.1% to US$1,165/t, CFR India rose 10.4% to US$1,170/t and FOB Southeast Asia rose 14.3% to US$1,120/t.
  • Naphtha CFR Japan rose 8.4% to US$900/t, widening the benzene–naphtha spread to about US$240/t.
  • Styrene producers were unable to pass on the full increase in benzene costs, squeezing derivative margins.
  • The base-case outlook sees FOB Korea benzene easing to around US$1,010/t by December 2026.

What Moved the Market in September

Crude Oil Rally Lifts Feedstock Costs

Benzene prices in Asia closely track crude oil and naphtha. The US Energy Information Administration reported that Brent crude averaged US$91 per barrel in August, US$7 higher than in July, as Middle Eastern exports remained constrained, and expects prices to average around US$90 per barrel in the second half of 2026. Brent rose further in September, and Fibre2Fashion reported that FOB Korea benzene climbed 13.3% between August 21 and September 18, from US$1,015 to US$1,150 per tonne, before easing slightly as crude retreated at the end of the month.

Northeast Asian Supply Remains Constrained

Asian benzene supply has been limited throughout 2026 by the naphtha shortage that followed the disruption to Middle Eastern exports. Rystad Energy has estimated that cracker utilization in Northeast Asia fell to around 60% in March from about 80% in February, while the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association reported record-low cracker operating rates of 68.8% in March and 67.3% in April. Lower cracker runs reduce output of pyrolysis gasoline, an important benzene feedstock, tightening aromatics supply even as operating rates gradually recover.

China's Inventories and Styrene Demand

China, Asia's largest benzene importer, has seen port inventories fall and domestic prices rise. Sinopec raised its East China posted benzene price from RMB 6,900 to RMB 8,000 per tonne in July, setting the stage for the third-quarter rally. In September, ICIS reported that China's styrene market rose sharply on stronger crude and benzene costs, while producers of ABS, polystyrene and expandable polystyrene continued to run at low rates because of weak margins.

Margins: Producers Gain, Derivatives Struggle

Benzene rose faster than naphtha in September, widening the benzene–naphtha spread to an estimated US$240 per tonne, well above the typical breakeven of around US$150 per tonne. This has restored margins for aromatics producers after a difficult first half. Downstream, however, Epignosis Insights estimates that the spread between styrene and benzene narrowed to around US$125 per tonne, below the level needed to cover other production costs, prompting non-integrated styrene plants to trim operating rates and limiting the scope for further benzene gains.

Regional Dynamics

Northeast Asian producers are prioritizing term customers and integrated downstream units over spot sales, while China's coal-based and integrated capacity gives it relative insulation from naphtha shortages. Import-dependent buyers in India and Southeast Asia remain the most price-sensitive, cutting purchases when prices spike.

Q4 2026 Outlook

Epignosis Insights' base case expects FOB Korea benzene to ease to around US$1,080 per tonne in October and US$1,010 per tonne by December, as crude oil prices moderate, cracker operating rates recover and post-holiday demand in China slows. Renewed escalation in the Gulf could push prices to around US$1,250 per tonne by December, while faster normalization of Middle Eastern exports combined with weak styrenics demand could bring them down to around US$880 per tonne.

“September's rally was driven by costs and constrained supply rather than stronger end-use demand,” said Abhijith Nair, Senior Research Manager at Epignosis Insights. “Benzene producers are enjoying their best margins of the year, but styrene makers cannot keep absorbing these costs. Unless the Middle East flares up again, we expect prices to ease through Q4 as cracker runs recover, so buyers should avoid locking in large spot volumes at current levels.”
