From Luxury Option to Everyday Feature: The Global Spread of Automotive Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting began as a signature feature of premium German sedans. Today it can be found in compact SUVs in China, pickup trucks in North America and electric hatchbacks in Europe. Epignosis Insights data on the Global Automotive Ambient Light Market, valued at US$3,201.5 million in 2025 and projected to reach US$6,330.4 million by 2032, shows how this feature is spreading across vehicle segments, sales channels and regions.
Vehicle Segments: Luxury and SUVs Lead
In 2025, SUVs account for US$1,198.7 million, or 37.4% of the market, and luxury vehicles for US$1,180.7 million, or 36.9%. Together, these two segments represent nearly three quarters of total value and are expected to generate about 79% of new revenue through 2032.
Luxury vehicles grow faster, at 11.0% a year, and are projected to overtake SUVs as the largest segment in 2030, reaching US$2,434.5 million by 2032. In luxury cars, ambient lighting is effectively universal, so growth comes from adding more zones, illuminated materials and dynamic features. SUVs grow at 10.6%, driven by rising adoption as lighting moves into standard equipment in mid-range trims.
Sedans, valued at US$598.1 million, grow at 9.5%, while trucks, valued at US$224.0 million, grow more slowly at 6.8%, with adoption concentrated in premium pickup trims and long-haul cabs.
OEM vs Aftermarket
Factory-fitted lighting dominates, with OEM channels valued at US$2,374.5 million in 2025, or 74.2% of the market. Automakers design lighting into door panels, dashboards and consoles early in vehicle development, integrating it with vehicle software.
The aftermarket, however, is growing faster at 11.0% a year, from US$827.0 million in 2025 to US$1,704.8 million by 2032. App-controlled LED strips and fibre optic kits, widely available through online retailers, allow owners of older vehicles to add multi-colour lighting without professional installation. The aftermarket's share rises from 25.8% to 26.9%.
Asia Pacific: The Largest Market
Asia Pacific is the largest region, valued at US$1,397.1 million in 2025, or 43.6% of the global market, and grows at 10.4% to US$2,771.1 million by 2032. Estimated installations in the region rise from about 12.4 million vehicles in 2025 to about 26.4 million by 2032.
China is the driving force. Chinese electric vehicle brands have made rich, multi-colour ambient lighting a standard feature, often with animations synchronised to music and driving modes. This has raised expectations across the Chinese market and forced international brands to respond. Domestic suppliers are scaling rapidly, intensifying competition.
North America: The Fastest Growing Region
North America is valued at US$910.9 million in 2025 and is the fastest growing region at 11.0%, reaching US$1,876.8 million by 2032. Its share rises from 28.5% to 29.6%. Strong demand for SUVs, pickups and premium vehicles supports factory lighting, while a vibrant customisation culture fuels aftermarket sales.
Europe: The Pioneer
Europe is valued at US$733.5 million in 2025 and grows at 9.9% to US$1,410.4 million by 2032. Premium German automakers pioneered ambient lighting and continue to push innovation, with multi-zone, addressable lighting and illuminated surfaces in their latest models. Europe's share eases from 22.9% to 22.3% as other regions grow faster.
Emerging Regions
The Middle East and Africa, valued at US$97.0 million in 2025, grows at 8.8%, supported by strong luxury vehicle demand in the Gulf states. Latin America, valued at US$63.0 million, grows at 6.5%, with adoption concentrated in premium models and the aftermarket.
Installations Rising Faster Than Value
Epignosis Insights estimates that ambient lighting installations, including factory and aftermarket, rise from about 28.4 million vehicles in 2025 to about 60.2 million by 2032, an 11.4% volume CAGR from 2026 to 2032. Average content per installation eases from about US$113 to about US$105, as LED costs fall and lighting spreads into more affordable vehicles.
Market Leaders
The market is led by ams OSRAM, with a 23.1% share in 2023, followed by Valeo at 13.9% and Hella at 11.0%, giving the top three suppliers nearly half of global revenue. Interior system suppliers such as Grupo Antolin, Yanfeng and Dräxlmaier, optical specialists such as SCHOTT and Innotec, and fast-growing Chinese suppliers such as Beijing Jingwei Hirain complete the competitive landscape.
Electric Vehicles as a Catalyst
Electric vehicles accelerate adoption in every region. Their open interiors and digital cabins are designed around light, and many use lighting to show charging status and vehicle readiness, making electric vehicle growth a powerful tailwind for ambient lighting suppliers worldwide.
What It Means for Suppliers
For suppliers, the spread of ambient lighting creates opportunities at both ends of the market: high-content, addressable systems for luxury vehicles and cost-optimised systems for mainstream SUVs and sedans. Success requires strong relationships with Chinese automakers, continued innovation with European premium brands, and a presence in North America's fast-growing SUV and pickup segments.
The Bottom Line
Ambient lighting has made the journey from luxury option to everyday feature. With installations set to more than double to about 60 million vehicles by 2032, and growth spread across every region and vehicle segment, ambient lighting is becoming a standard part of the modern driving experience.
